Based on all of the Facebook and Twitter drama i have been witnessing from mostly white people who are freaked out about Carter's comments about race and the Joe Wilson debaucle, I am amazed at how uncomfortable many people are about talking about the reality of racism. The mainstream “colorblind” discourse prevalent in our society today implies that talking about race (this very unfortunate but powerful social construct) is inherently racist. Discourses that raise consciousness about racism are not racist, they lead us toward liberation. We need to drag out our dirty laundry and wash it instead of letting it rot.
So-called “colorblind” or “neutral” policies and practices often still harbor understated and covert racial bias within. They undermine consciousness about the reality and prevalence of racial oppression. So-called “colorblind" or “neutral” policies and practices often still harbor understated and covert racial bias within. They undermine consciousness about the reality and prevalence of racial oppression. So many people in the dominant culture get all riled up about individual acts of meanness being the only source of racism, when in reality, racial bias and discrimination imbue themselves throughout our systems, policies and minds. All of us are conditioned within this racist system and culture that took centuries to create. There have been advancements sure, but we have NOT arrived-- and anyone who believes that is delirious.
